The F-14A+Kai Super Tomcat is a U.N. Spacy variant of the old Grumman F-14 Tomcat American fighter jet that was used by the U.N. Forces during the wars of unification depicted in the OVA Macross Zero.

Characteristics Edit

The F-14KAI variant has been retrofitted with overtechnology avionics and new radar systems, as well as GE F110-GE-400 afterburning turbofans (although it does retain the cockpit scheme of the original F-14A/B).

Using more of the overtechnology obtained from the SDF-1 Macross, it was later upgraded into the first ever variable fighter, the VF-0 Phoenix.

Appearances Edit

A variant of the F-14 Tomcat, the F-14 Kai (a reference to the F-4EJ Kai Phantom II, the Japanese upgrade of the second most-produced Western jet fighter) appears in the beginning of Macross Zero, in order to give viewers a chance to compare designs, and to understand the design limitations of 'simple' conventional combat jets in comparison with the far more advanced variable fighter mecha.
