Gnerl Fighter Pods (ジナール空戦ポッド Jināru Kūsen Poddo) are Zentradi one-man fighter pods featured in the Super Dimension Fortress Macross television series.[1]

Technology & Combat Characteristics

Gnerl Fighter Pods are fighter aircraft that can fly at Mach 6.3 (at altitudes in the thousands) in an atmosphere. The Gnerl Fighter Pods have an overwhelming level of maneuverability with each one possessing three maneuvering thrusters.[2]

Each Gnerl Fighter Pod has a length of 20.6 meters. There are three thermonuclear rockets and three maneuvering thrusters in the rear of each Gnerl Fighter Pod as wells as six small thrust vectoring plates. The power output section of a Gnerl Fighter Pod's main engines and so on are installed in the rear of the fuselage. The landing gear consists of three retractable landing skids (one at the front, two at the back).[3]

Armaments

  • Non-Rotating Triple-Barrel Beam Gun
    • Mounted at the front of the fighter.[3]
  • Missile launchers
    • Missiles are launched from the three, two-tubed missile launchers, amounting to six. It is unknown how many a Gnerl can have stored, however.[3]

History

Space War I

On February 7, 2009, after Vrlitwhai Kridanik saw the disorganization of the primitive species that somehow possessed legendary reaction weapons and managed to restore a down Supervision Army Vessel, a Zentradi soldier informed him that the Gnerl Fighter Pods had pinpointed their targets and were launching. They launched from a Quiltra-Queleual-class Landing Ship Tank and descended into Earth's atmosphere where they engaged in a fierce battle against VF-1A Valkyries in the airspace of South Ataria Island.

One Gnerl shot down a VF-1A with its beam gun, frightening Hikaru Ichijyo, who had accidentally became the pilot of a VF-1D Valkyrie. Major Roy Focker of the Skull Squadron told all fighters in the Sepia and Mont flights to scatter the Gnerl Fighter Pods in Zone 428. Shortly afterwards, Roy casually destroyed some Gnerl Fighter Pods with missiles from his VF-1S Valkyrie because the Gnerl Fighter Pods were approaching Hikaru's VF-1D. However, a beam from another Gnerl managed to hit Hikaru's VF-1D and he plummeted down to South Ataria Island, spinning. (SDFM: "Boobytrap")

Notes & Trivia

  • Originally, Gnerl was merely an assumed name for the Fighter Pods, coming from the lines the Zentradi soldier said to Vrlitwhai before the Fighter Pods launched.
Gnerl target pinpointed. (ジナール射出地点です。)
  • The Gnerl fighter is similar in basic shape to the Colonial Viper from Battlestar Galactica.
