Satelight

Satelight (株式会社サテライト Kabushiki-gaisha Sateraito) is a Japanese animation studio which serves as a subsidiary of the SANKYO Group. They are a member of the Japan Video Association.

History

The company's name, Satelight, is a combination of the initials "S apporo" (Sapporo), "A nimate" (Animate), "T e chnology" (Technology), and Entertainment. It has been a production company specializing in digital animation production since its inception in 1993, and was originally a division of the software company, (DMG Mori) B.U.G.

In 2001, Satelight became independent its original parent when B.U.G. Linkcube made a capital participation, and the company's CEO, Yoshiyuki Uchida, became Satelight's chairman. For the company's first original project of that same year, they produced Earth Girl Arjuna by Shōji Kawamori, who previously directed the 1996 animated television special "Spring and Chaos" which was inspired by the life of poet Kenji Miyazawa. The art style for that film used a style similar to 1985's Night on the Galactic Railroad. Shōji Kawamori became a full-time director of Satelight in 2003.

In addition to moving its head office from Sapporo, Hokkaido to Suginami-ku, Tokyo in 2006, Satelight entered into a capital tie-up with the SANKYO Group. From this agreement, Kawamori was contracted to produce new animated segments for Pachinko games such as CR Fever Genesis of Aquarion. In the meantime, most of Satelight's notable Macross works under Big West in that era were Macross Zero, Macross Frontier and its theatrical films, and later with Macross Δ and Macross Δ Movie: Passionate Walküre.

Satelight helped produce an "animation collaboration cafe" for Shirobaco. They opened in Asagaya Anime Street on 2014 but closed on January 20, 2019.[1]
