Super Dimension Fortress Macross The First (超時空要塞マクロス
It was first serialized in Macross Ace by KADOKAWA on November 10, 2009 but has changed serialization medium several times since. The series is currently ongoing despite several delays and hiatus by the author. It is currently being distributed by Cycomi on their homepage or App.
Overview
In 2008, Macross' commemorative work for its 25th anniversary, Macross Frontier, proved to be both a critical and financial smash hit. A re-evaluation of the series proceeded and in 2009, it was decided to produce a serialized manga retelling of the original Super Dimension Fortress Macross television series that would incorporate elements from later entries in the series.
Macross The First is based on the Super Dimension Fortress Macross television animation, but incorporates elements not present during the original broadcast, such as modern day technological advancements including foldable cellphones, e-mail and digital photo frames. Story elements from the OVA series Macross Zero and the Unification Wars were also incorporated in the extended flashback sequence "Tales of South Ataria".
In addition, returning artist Haruhiko Mikimoto redesigned the original character and mechanical designs to share a closer aesthetic to The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?. Shōji Kawamori would return to redesign the original VF-1J Valkyrie, slimming its proportions and tweaking its head design, while Hidetaka Tenjin worked to redesign the VF-1D Valkyrie.
