The VF-0S Reactive Armored Phoenix (VF-0S リアクティブアーマー・フェニックス) commonly known as Armored Phoenix is a variant of VF-0S Phoenix that featured in in the OVA Macross Zero. Known pilot for this Variable Fighter are Roy Focker.

Development[]

The VF-0 Phoenix is the first successful attempt of materializing the Variable Fighter (VF) concept, however it lacks the defensive capabilities and firepower in Battroid mode was a major issue for the VF. To mitigate this issue a specialized equipment was created, called the "PWS-0X Reactive Armor".[1]

Technology & Combat Characteristics[]

The VF-0S Reactive Armored Phoenix is a heavy armor configuration of the VF-0S Phoenix. The PWS-0X is a specialized armor system that use the "Reactive Armor" type, which an armor system that utilize explosive reaction after the said part was hit for multiple times. The PWS-0X itself covered majority of the VF's body giving it a significant protection for the pilot and the critical parts such as mechanical joint parts. In addition, a pair of sensors and jump boosters was mounted on the rear side of the VF to accomodate better detection capabilities and balanced the heavy weight of the armor. In terms of Armaments the PWS-0X is equipped with in total fifty Micro Missiles, mounted on both of the shoulder and chest unit.[2]

While the PWS-0X armor itself increased the VF's overall defensive capabilities and firepower, it some downsides while using this particular equipment. Since the Armor itself covering majority of the VF's body, it greatly affected its mobility, weight and limit the VF-0S only on Battroid mode.[2] Then the armor itself was designed to withstand sustained barrage of enemy fire, but it cannot take prolonged direct hit, as it will reduce the Armor's durability and can compromise hull integrity of the VF that using the PWS-0X.[3] Due to this reason this particular equipment only used by experienced pilot for special circumstances such as escort or defensive purposes.

Despite its lacking the PWS-0X plays a major role for development of next-generation Armored Pack type equipment, as its operational data was implemented for the development of VF-1 Valkyrie's GBP-1S Armored Pack System and primarily the VF-11 Thunderbolt's APS-11 Protective Armor System.[4]
