Yoshiyuki Takani (高荷 義之 Takani Yoshiyuki) is a Japanese illustrator whose work has appeared in countless hobby magazines, cover art, box art for hobby kits for both real and fictional war stories, most notably the Macross franchise. He was born in December 28, 1935 in Maebashi City, Gunma Prefecture.
Career[]
Takani is best known for having produced some of the most recognizable illustrations for the Super Dimension Fortress Macross and Macross 7 television series and the iconic poster for The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?. He also worked on many memorable classic science fiction works, including Star Wars, Combat Mecha Xabungle, Aura Battler Dunbine, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and Mobile Suit Gundam as well as a host of giant robot animation such as Mazinger Z and Dancouga. He is known as a master on mechanical illustrations along with his mentor, science fiction and fantasy artist Shigeru Komatsuzaki.[1]
Much of his work was collected in Wonder Art Takani Style art book,[2] and he has held many retrospectives of his work, including the Suginami Animation Museum in 2015 where he showcased some of his lesser-known illustrations for the Macross 7 television series.[3] He has been cited be mechanical illustrator Hidetaka Tenjin as a major influence on his work.
